A great book about the longest-running written constitution in world history

The three branches of our federal government, as well as the state and local governments, are all continuously affected by a document that was originally drafted shortly after the American Battle for Independence. Items that were never dreamt of by our Founding Fathers, such as peyote use, x-rated films, and the Internet have all tested the language of our Constitution in modern times, but it is still the average citizen's bulwark against the tyranny of a too-strong central government.
This well-illustrated book, a project of the Annenberg Foundation Trust, is divided into two parts. The first 67 pages contain the introduction and the first five chapters that explain the need for a Constitution, how it came into being, the type of government that was fashioned from the Constitution, and how the Constitution has been interpreted and expanded over time.
The second and largest section of the book breaks the Constitution down into the Preamble, the Articles, Sections, and Clauses, and the Amendments. Each subsection, e.g. Article IV, Section 2, Clauses 1-3, is divided into two parts: "What it Says" and "What it Means." The Amendments also have timelines to show how they came into being, and how they influenced the course of justice in this nation.
The profuse illustrations, many of them in color show the people involved or affected by a particular part of the Constitution, e.g. portraits of Susan B. Anthony, Earl Warren, and Ring Lardner Jr. There are political cartoons, and photographs of all sorts of interesting miscellany such as the dueling pistols that were used by Treasury Secretary Alexander Hamilton and Vice President Aaron Burr, a license plate that reads "REPEAL 18th Amendment," and an IKEA furniture ad ("Because not everyone can vote themselves a raise.") related to the 27th Amendment.
This is a book that can be read straight through with pleasure, or dipped into as the need arises. I started by dipping, then read straight through for the fascinating insights it gave into American History (NOT my favorite subject in school). One example concerns the Third Amendment, which states: "No Soldier shall, in time of peace be quartered in any house, without the consent of the Owner, nor in time of war, but in a manner to be prescribed by law." I had always assumed the Amendment had never been tested in court, since the British no longer quartered soldiers in American dwellings, but I was wrong. According to the Timeline for the Third and Fourth Amendments, in 1982 prison guards were evicted from their employee residences on prison grounds when they went on strike, and National Guardsmen were housed in their quarters. "The court saw the guardsmen as equivalent to 'soldiers' and ruled that the prison guards enjoyed a right to privacy in their residences, even if the prison owned their housing." It was the only federal court ruling on an alleged violation of the Third Amendment!

Appendix 2 is concerned with Supreme Court decisions that shaped the Constitution.
